Begin here (Terrorism)
Terrorism. A word that is commonly associated with the September 11th bombings of the World Trade Center in New York back in 2001 that caused us to enter a long lasting war in the Middle East. But, what exactly is Terrorism?? How can we define it? Well, that has been the problem between governments for many years. See...what one country considers a "terrorist" another country might see as a "freedom fighter." For example, the men who carried out the attacks on September 11th are considered Terrorists to the United States because, well, they attacked us and many of our people died. To their people, they were considered Freedom Fighters because they carried out the attack in order to deliver an overall message to the United States regarding long standing involvement of the US in the Middle East...in more simple terms, they want us out of there! Now you can probably understand the top poster to the right, which is also the poster I have in my classroom. You can apply this same concept to it. The "original Homeland Security" were the Native Americans who were fighting off the Europeans who arrived in 1492. To them, the Europeans could be considered terrorists (even though they didn't call them that) because they came and invaded a land that was not theirs and many Native Americans died from warfare and disease...but to the Europeans, they could consider themselves freedom fighters because they were "discovering" new lands in order to get more living space, more prestige for their country, and get more resources for their people back home in Europe. It ALL DEPENDS on how you look at it, which is why many countries have their own different definitions on how they categorize terrorism. The world organization the United Nations has their own definition. Our Homeland Security government branch has their own definition. Our FBI even has their own definition of terrorism. Although they all have their own definitions, they do all point to certain similarities of what makes a terrorist...well...a terrorist. The next assignments will look deeper into how the United States categorizes a terrorist and how the US government has responded to terrorism.

DIRECTIONS: Okay...so this is usually one of my FAVORITE assignments from this unit! lol I feel like I say that about every assignment but whatever...that's why I became a teacher lol So sad we can't do it in class...this one usually sparks some of the best conversations!!! This is a what I would call a "fun" assignment lol You are going to be looking at five different case studies from the United States and around the world. Based off what you have read (which won't be a lot), YOU will then determine... are they a TERRORIST??? or FREEDOM FIGHTER??? You will of course have to find information from the passage to back up your claim!!! You will put all of your answers in the graphic organizer provided to make it easier (I have included it as a word document and PDF document). You will see that it is organized by case study and questions you have to answer. When you are finished, please submit to turnitin.com. This will be your only assignment this week. Next week you will have one or two more assignments. We are nearing the end of the school year with three weeks left including this week. The last week, which is the week of the 25th - 29th, will be a week for all of you to catch up on work so there will be no assignments that week from me! You will NOT have a final. Just the remaining assignments from this week and next week. SO PLEASE GIVE IT YOUR ALL!!! We are almost done guys!!!! SO SAD we didn't get to finish off the year together in class. I was thinking to myself I will not be able to get a class photo to put on my wall for next year like I have done every year with all my classes! :( oh well...such is life. Anyhow, please let me know if you have any questions!!! THANK YOU guys for all of your hard work and to those constantly checking in! You are truly appreciated and it is always nice to hear from you all! Gives almost a sense of "normalcy" with all the craziness. Have a good week y'all!

DIRECTIONS: Read through the PowerPoint. There are NO questions for the PowerPoint...but you MUST read through it in order to understand Assignment 16...which is at the end of the PowerPoint. There are some rhetorical questions in there, but that is just to get you thinking. The directions for Assignment 16 are in the PowerPoint on the last slide. Let me know if you have any questions. Per usual, I have provided both Word Document version and PDF version of the documents you will need. Let me know if you have any questions!!!
One more thing: Grades...remember that this ENTIRE SEMESTER is CREDIT or NO CREDIT. This is the directive that has been given to us by the district. This is not just my policy. This is why the grade book for US History has not been updated as it is essentially useless for us right now. I have been keeping my own log of assignments on my computer. If you have been doing work and communicating with me...you are fine!!! MOST OF MY STUDENTS are receiving credit. If you are concerned...message me! But like I said...if you have been on top of things...you are good to go!! :) I know these are weird times...but like I told you all since the beginning...I have been understanding of all situations so long as you COMMUNICATE :) If you are behind...don't worry..there is still time. Have a great week y'all.
