Let's get started!
Unit 4
We will now begin our 4th and final quarter of the year! This unit has an overall theme: National Security vs. Civil Liberties. This seems to have been the theme of our country for at least the past two decades! But what exactly does it mean? Well...Let's start off by defining the two terms. National Security is when the government must enact certain laws or policies in an effort to keep its citizens safe. Civil Liberties is defined as certain rights that the people hold, like freedom of speech, privacy or religion, which are protected by the law. So how are Civil Liberties and National Security related? Well...sometimes the government must enact certain laws (for the safety of citizens) even if that means taking away or infringing upon citizen's rights. In the history of the United States, this has happened plenty of times, whether people realize it or not! In this unit, we will be taking a look at those events that caused our government to execute certain laws but in turn limited the rights of the people.
